Auto Standby

Sky's innovative auto standby feature is a simple way of reducing the power consumption of all Sky boxes by turning them to standby automatically when they're not in use, and is saving energy in our customers' households and reducing carbon emissions across the UK. New software is being downloaded onto Sky+ boxes that will enable auto standby to work 24 hours a day.

Previously, boxes go on to standby at night (between 11pm and 3.30am) if they have been inactive for two hours, but now Sky+ boxes will go into standby after four hours of inactivity during the daytime.

The environmental benefits can be shared by everyone; improvements to the energy efficiency of our set top boxes have helped customers save approximately 90,000 tonnes of CO2 a year*. The financial benefit for Sky customers of auto standby is a reduction of approximately £12m a year from their electricity bills!

*90,000 tonnes is a conservative figure based on the roll-out of day and night time auto-standby to all digiboxes in the market, with 12 hours on and 12 hours in standby.

When your Sky box goes into Auto Standby

If your Sky box remains inactive for more than four hours during the day, or two hours between 11pm and 3.30am, a warning will show on your TV screen, "Your digibox is about to go into standby." If you're watching TV and don't want your box to switch itself off, press back up to continue viewing. If you do not press this button (because you're not watching TV or have fallen asleep), your Sky box will automatically go into Standby. When you turn your Sky box back on, after it has been in auto standby, it will be tuned to the last channel you were watching.

  1. If my box goes into standby, will I lose any programmes I'm recording?
If you have a Sky+ or Sky+HD box, don't worry about any recordings you have set. Whilst in standby your set top box can still record up to two programmes at the same time.
  2. Can I switch Auto Standby off?
If you regularly watch TV in the early hours of the morning it is possible to switch off Auto Standby:

    1. Press services on your Sky remote control.
    2. Highlight Auto Standby and press select.
    3. Highlight Enable Auto Standby and set it to OFF.
    4. Highlight Save New Settings and press select.
    5. Press sky to return to normal viewing.
